Magnesium: a material of possibilities. Due to its exceptional properties – low weight (density: 1.81 g/cm3 for AZ91) combined with high strength (tensile strength Rm: 248 MPa for AZ91) – the potential of magnesium as a material was recognized early on.
Today, we find magnesium components in all major industries where weight saving or electromagnetic shielding is important: automotive, power tools, electronics, computer technology, aerospace, telecommunications, optics and medical technology.
Experts believe that the technical possibilities of this material are far from exhausted – provided that the entire process chain for manufacturing components from magnesium is mastered.
Magnesium in the power tool industry
The power tool industry is characterized by extreme demands on mechanical strength, low weight, precision, and cost-effectiveness. The die-cast magnesium housing presented here is a highly integrated component with low wall thicknesses of up to 1.0 mm. In order to achieve the required strength values, four steel bushings were cast into the housing. The surface is powder-coated and printed. The housing is machined and delivered to the customer ready for installation.

Magnesium in the electrical industry
This computer housing focuses on weight reduction, functional integration, and surface properties. With an average wall thickness of 1.5 mm, a housing was designed that integrates all required functions using delicate geometries and is ideally suited for rough use thanks to the choice of magnesium as the material. The case thus serves not only as a mechanical functional carrier for circuit boards, drives, screens, and other add-on parts, but also for EMC shielding and heat dissipation. The surface is powder-coated and printed.

Magnesium in the automotive industry
The use of magnesium in this antenna shell for the vehicle interior has made it possible to meet the requirements for electromagnetic shielding, temperature resistance, and mechanical strength. In particular, the possibilities for functional integration through the casting of very delicate structures and functional areas in magnesium have been fully exploited in this complex component with thin wall thickness. This requires very close cooperation between the customer and the foundry from the very beginning of the development process.
